Frequently Asked Questions about the Alameda Soul Club
This Thing we Do?
We celebrate the music genre of American Soul which continues to bring dancers onto a dance floor and collectors into record shops
What is the Music?
We love Motown, Northern Soul, Rare, Modern (70’s) and today’s new soul. This is a celebration of soul music born in the United States in the 1960’s that flourished through the 1970’s. Although, to this day there are bands creating new songs for an immense catalog of music.
The soul scene emerged from the mod cultures of Britain and the U.S. Distinctive dance movements emerged and long-lost soul recordings became anthems on the dance floors.
Motown may have released the most celebrated soul recordings but obscure gems on little known labels found their way to Britain DJ’s and were titled Northern Soul. In the U.S. soul clubs and collectors have described these gems as Rare Soul.
What is this Scene about?
All over the world. there are Rare and Northern Soul clubs that hold events on any given weekend. ‘Soulies’ travel to these events to dance and hunt for records to add to their collections.
Northern Soul created its own dance movements that are a combination of traditional folk dancing, Soul Train shuffles and kung fu kicks. It’s unique but extremely infectious.
There is also a record collecting element. Rare 45’s and long play albums are sought at record markets and at many soul events.
There is a tradition at soul events that our DJ’s spin music off 45’s and 33’s. It’s a point of pride for these DJ’s to show that they collected these rate records that can be over 50 years old.
