Soul Seeds for Spring
April brought out flowers and a big crowd at the Fireside
This was fantastic event with our record attendance. We have found it’s been fun to bring in DJ’s who have played for us before and DJ’s that have their own following inside and out of the Bay Area. It was heartwarming to see the joy on DJ Katja Tanneberg’s face as she returned to the turntables for the first time after a 19 year hiatus. Hailing from Germany, Katja was a 10 year regular DJ at Berlin’s Roter Salon’s Northern Soul Parties. Katja played her first set with DJ Fuchsia and surprised us with some hidden gems in her second set. Her next gigs will be with San Jose’s Vinyl Council Social Club events and this club will be bringing her back this fall.
A special thanks to DJ Fuchsia who not only played her solo set, she did an end of day, round robin set with DJ Kula Baker. Our day began with DJ. Mr. Robert Ferguson accompanying the dance class for the first hour and then rolling out his own set featuring his new favorite song ‘Needle in a Haystack’ by the Velvelettes.
Finally, we brought to the decks, two well known record collector/sellers who thankfully for us had a Sunday without record swap commitments. DJ’s Matt Stout and DJ Stay Aware showed us what their years of collecting can do and when they had a duo set together they charmed us all, filling the dance floor. The height of it is seen in the video shot when they played Curtis Mayfield’s Move on Up.

For the Love of Soul
Our February event was another crowd pleaser
Our philosophy is to showcase Bay Area DJ soul talent and at this event we were fortunate to have two, much loved DJ’s, The Selecter DJ Kirk and DJ Alvinstayxgold on our decks. We also introduced DJ Terry Dactyl (Jess Lipsky) New York Times writer and author of “It Ain’t Retro”, a history of Daptone Records.
DJ Terry Dactyl was accompanied by Alameda Soul Club dance floor shaker, DJ Young Royal as well as DJ Kirk for some dueling sets of fun. Our event launched with club founder Lisa Ferguson giving Northern Soul dance lessons, accompanied by Mr. Ferguson on the decks. It was wonderful to see these dancers take to the style so easily. Rounding out our DJ crew was the return of Kula Baker who impressed us with some fun Northern rarities and also filled that dance floor.
The club raised $130 for the Alameda Food Bank in our raffle for a Valentine’s gift basket, two copies of Jess Lipsky’s, It Ain’t Retro and two cash prizes.
Our cookie baker Rebecca Carson brought her Italian cantucci and lunch specials were offered to the club by the neighboring, Calafia Taqueria.

Soul for the Holidays
A new venue and a whole lot of soul and souls in attendance
The club needed to find a bigger dance floor and we found a welcoming home at The Fireside Lounge here in Alameda. The Fireside’s hospitality was first rate and they gave us all plenty of room to shuffle. Thankfully so, as we filled the place up. It’s proving that our Sunday afternoon events are popular.
The DJ lineup from our premier event came to our new home with the addition of Alameda’s Kula Baker, A DJ who can be seen at venues throughout the city. Mr Ferguson, started the day, followed by the beguiling RubyVee and the fine Pat Paterson. The Young Royal and DJ Fuchsia finished our day, filling out the floor with dancers wanting more.
Our second raffle for the Alameda Food Bank raised $157. Grand prize was a big box of unsorted soul records from Beakers Records of Alameda, a $50 gift certificate to Fox and Doll ladies accessories in San Francisco and a picture disc Vince Guaraldi greatest hits album.
With great thanks to our Rebecca Carson who provided shortbread to get us into the Christmas mood.

Our Inaugural Event October 5, 2025
The soul club played its first song California Soul by Marlena Shaw to begin a day of great music, dancing and new friendships.
We thank the owners and staff of Forbidden Island Tiki Bar for opening their doors to us for our first event.
